Cocoons

Giant cocoons made of merino wool, other fibers including silk, bamboo, viscose, and flax are represented in this sculpture. Natural products for eco dying are also used.

During the pandemic we sheltered in place, our homes becoming like cocoons. They protected us and kept us safe. As we emerge from our cocoons, we are reminded of thebeauty of the butterfly as she emberges from her shelter.

As a fledgling felting artist, Susan Gately enjoys refining her practice, learning new felting techniques and skills to assimilate into her work.  Currrently she has been working o developing eco-printing skills on handmade wool.  These are represented in this work.
