My Graveyard

For the past six years I have been carving my own gravestone with the intent of rendering it useless by outliving the death date. I also carve a some irreverent stones each year. This is an ongoing project of creating a cemetery where no dead reside.

Michael Updike received his BFA from Mass College if Arts. His MFA from Vermont College. The past seven years he has been carving slate. Both repurposed slate shingles as wall art and gravestone commissions in slate, marble and granite.
